Maplin, the consumer electronics retailer has announced the launch of an iPhone app which is part of a wider campaign to broaden its multi channel proposition.

The mobile commerce app will have transactional functionality and offers consumers access to more than 15,000 products, special offers, sale items and the latest prices in store.

The app also allows customers to locate their nearest Maplin store using geo location technology and is available using Apple’s iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad and uses the iOS 3.0 operating system or above.

David O’Reilly, Marketing Directore, Maplin, said : “The new iPhone Shopping App further strengthens our multi channel capabilities and complements our existing mobile website, making it even more convenient for our customers to shop at Maplin.”

Maplin are not the first retailer and will certainly not be the last retailer introducing apps for smartphones, with many considering mobile development and stratgey of paramount importance for retailers to offer multi channel propositions.

QVC and Debenhams have revisited their mobile apps and introduced updated versions in recent weeks, while other retailers including French Connection have recently joined the world of mobile apps.
